Walking poles are an important addition to your equipment list. We would not consider a long distant hike like the Tour du Mont Blanc without them.

Walking poles need not be expensive. We bought ours on Ebay. They were new and cost £10 a pair including delivery. They performed superbly on the TMB and will probably last us many years.
With walking poles you can
- walk in difficult and dangerous terrain with
confidence despite the unbalancing effect of your
backpack.
- use your upper body to help push you up steep
inclines
- use your upper body to take the pressure off your
knees during steep descents
- use your upper body to take the pressure off a foot,
knee or ankle injury
