If you walk the Tour du Mont Blanc whilst fit, strong and well equipped there is no doubt that it will be a more enjoyable and safer holiday then it might otherwise be. Preparation is key.

We'd only walked with day sacks before so to ensure our readiness we trained for the walk with weighted rucksacks and also did some gym work to improve our upper body strength.

We trained with walking poles and were extremely glad that we did. Getting around the Tour du Mont Blanc without them would have proved both hazardous and painful.

We understood the need to travel as light as possible which meant just one set of clothes for walking and one for refuge wear.

We ensured that all our paperwork was in place, passports, travel documents, medical insurance,

Our 2007 TMB
accommodation list. We waterproofed important papers. Knowing which equipment and clothing would be useful and which not became a matter of experimentation and post walk review.

Ultimately, we built the checklist below along with our views on usefulness and also tips and techniques  which hopefully you'll find helpful. If you feel anything is missing or you have some tips of your own please let us know.

Note that everything below, other than what was worn whilst walking, fitted in a rucksack with space to spare. My rucksack including water and walking poles was 30lbs and Anne-Marie's was 25lbs , but they could probably have been 10lbs lighter if we'd packed lightweight essentials only.
