In the event of injury it's important that you can ensure you receive appropriate medical treatment and if necessary, repatriation. If you are British you will be familiar with the EHIC . The EHIC is free to UK citizens and provides for only basic medical assistance within the EEA (European Economic Area) and Switzerland. So it's wise to take out additional medical insurance otherwise you may be faced with unexpected bills in the event of an accident.

This additional medical insurance usually comes under the general heading 'travel insurance' . Most travel insurance now provides cover for outdoor sports. It also often includes specific exclusions.

It's vital that you check policy wording before committing yourself.

We checked the policy of our usual travel insurer and discovered that although hiking was covered (along with canyoning, water-skiing, canoeing and much more), hiking about 2000 meters was specifically excluded. This was a great shame as our insurer is one of the lowest cost travel insurers in the market.

After some research we eventually insured with an alternative insurer - which at £29.97 for two people for 20 days was a bearable expense.
