If you're going to be using your map a lot then it makes sense to have a map case.
In actual fact, we found that a combination of the Cicerone guide and route markings meant that we only consulted the map two or three times during the hike.
So if you don't have a map case and don't want the expense of buying one, you'll probably find that a sealable transparent plastic bag is sufficient.
