Having uploaded it with Tour du Mont Blanc waypoints we had the capability to check our position if we thought we were straying off the track.

It also provided the means to record our actual route and give us altitude information. 
Be aware that you will need to carry extra batteries if you intend to keep your GPS on whilst you're hiking. Also, make sure it's set to 'battery save' mode.

If you intend to keep a track of your progress, then unless your GPS has a high capacity memory, we'd suggest you set your 'track resolution' to 'lowest'.
We took a GPS as a safety device rather than something to replace our compass.
