We always like to take a few bits and pieces that would assist in case of minor difficulties or emergency.

This is not the same as carrying a full emergency pack which would include everything from fish hooks and fishing line through to a wire saw and signaling equipment.

As we were on a recognised trek and could expect other walkers to pass every few hours we just took cable ties, old shoe laces, matches, strips of bicycle inner tube for fire lighting and a few small clips. This was all contained within a plastic bag.

And did we use any of it? Yes. As we entered Switzerland, one of the shoe laces became a chin strap to prevent Anne-Marie's hat flying off in strong wind.
