A glorious hot and sunny day. Left the Auberge du Crêt after a good breakfast and bowl of coffee at 8.20am.
Made good time to Col de Voza. The restaurant du Miage was closed so we carried on rather than stop for lunch as planned. Stopped for a snack by a river just before Le Contamines-Montjoies.
Reached Les Contamines-Montjoie just after 1 p.m. Much too early to stop for the night so we stopped for drinks in a café and decided to head on to Nant Borrant. It meant 1 ½ hours more and a steep climb but that would be 1 ½ hours less tomorrow and approx 400m less to climb.
Phoned through to the refuge and there were no problems getting us in. Brought postcards and wrote them in the town square (and bought toothbrush for Bruce and saucisson for tomorrow's lunch).
Then, about 3.30 we headed off. Stopped at the Chapel de Notre Dame de la Gorge. Very beautiful and ornate inside. Then started the 300m steep climb. It was very tiring and took much longer than we'd anticipated.
Got to the refuge about 5.20. What a lovely place. Very English style dorm, not unlike a YHA room. And we have it to ourselves at the moment. Showers hot and good. Meal is at 7 p.m.
We averaged 3.9 km per hour (walking average) including strolls in Les Contamines. We should sleep well tonight.
Supper excellent. Vegetable soup, roast meat (pork?), gratin of potatoes, cheese, French apple tart. Rounded it off with a lovely coffee.
Breakfast light but fine. Only negative - no bowl for the coffee (had to use a cup!) but plenty of coffee in jug.
