We've arrived at our first night stop, Auberge de la Crêt, and I'm sitting writing this outside. We forgot to bring our lunch sandwiches with us so I'm feeling quite peckish (supper is over an hour away!).
The trains down from Paris went smoothly as far as Bellegarde where there was a 20 minutes delay in the train to St Gervais (more than the time between our scheduled arrival and the connection train!).
Very luckily though we made up a bit of time and the train to Les Houches was waiting when we got off.
Found the hostel without too much trouble though it was all uphill from Les Houches and the weather was now very hot and sunny.
The place is basic but clean: unisex showers, toilets and bunks and a place to keep rucksacks and boots.
I'm sitting in the garden in shorts and t-shirts with awesome views up towards the snow capped mountains. Feeling somewhat overwhelmed by the challenge but will probably feel better after food and drink.
Supper was filling. Four courses: pea soup, meat and noodles, cheese, fruit in syrup/ Lots of bread and water.
Breakfast very good - bowls of coffee.
